What are the benefits to Rockstar games of using Crowdsourcing to hire new environment designers?

Some of the people they hire will often be new and just starting out meaning that they will sign contracts for small salaries or just for the exposure and experience. Others will have worked for other existing companies for example such as Sumo Digital and will have pre-existing experience and skills making them just as good if not better than the employees they would already have.

Online scheduling tools allow you to manage projects - your U6 questions are likely to be centred around the creation of media campaigns. meaning you need to reference online tools which can:

  • Manage multiple diaries
  • Organise Teams
  • Assign Tasks
  • Manage a timeline
  • Set Deadlines
  • Communicate changes/updates

Monday.com
Quickbase
Wrike
Trello

Why is using an online tool such as Trello or Monday.com to manage projects more beneficial than using Outlook?

Using Trello or Monday.com to manage projects is more beneficial than using Outlook because they are designed to assign tasks, and manage and set deadlines efficiently. Meanwhile Outlook can organise teams and communicate changes but is otherwise unreliable as a planning application, meaning  you would need to rely on other apps under the Microsoft conglomerate such as Microsoft Teams.

Trello and Monday are colour coded; this is a very useful feature as it shows where each member of the team or each department is up to with their tasks.

Monday and Trello can be used for free unlike with Microsoft which can only be used for a price.

In recent papers, the exam paper has referenced and accepted answers based around e-sports as a form of social media (gaming).

E-Sports (or electronic sports) is a term used to describe competitive video gaming in that esports is competitive (human vs human) and usually has an engaging spectator element to it, like traditional sports.

E-sports tournaments usually consist of a amateur or professional gamers competing against one another one for a cash prize.
For example, League of Legends pits five players against another five in a virtual battle arena to destroy each others base. Whereas in shooters, like Call of Duty, Overwatch and Counter-Strike, players are pit against each other in various modes to complete an object.

E-sports allow players in teams or competition to communicate, as well as stream their matches and competitions with audiences through platforms such as Twitch.Twitch users follow individuals (streamers), Channels or Game titles that produce their own content for consumption (prosumers.)

1. E-Sports players use electric agora (forums) to share information on matches and competitions.

2. E-Sports services (Twitch) allow a wider audience globally (globalsiation) to view matches

3. E-Sports events can be used by media professionals (game publsihers) to promote new products to a targeted audience E-sports channels (Dota 2, Overwatch, Rocket League etc.)

4. Dedicated social media channels - Twitch - exist for E-Sports.

5. E-Sports competitions allow media professionals to engage in advertising and dialogue with a ready made target audience.

6. E-Sports followers can live chat and react to matches in real time through the steaming channels (Twitch, YouTube gaming.)

Moral Panics:

When social media is used to circulate views which some find morally upsetting resulting in widespread concern/panic.

Examples: Blue whale challenge, Andrew Tate, Tory 'Small Boats' Rhetoric, Trump + Bleach.

Social media allows this to happen due to the lack of fact checking  + the rise of citizen journalism means stories/ panics are hard to spot + easy to spread.

Wikinomics: (Tapscott + Williams)

The idea that through online, global collaboration, products can be made better and faster.

Examples:

  • Linux Operating Systems
  • Open Office
  • Minecraft (before MS bought it.)
Principles:

Sharing of ideas
Non proprietary file types
Collaboration (peering)
Acting globally

Benefit to media products: Using Wikinomics Principles, small producers can create better media products through online collaboration

The Long Tail Theory:
The principle that a media product which does not initially perform well financially can do so over time given a better distribution method.

Examples: Anchorman, Fortnite, Slade's 'Merry Xmas Everybody'

Distribution: Online streaming, VoD, MoD, GoD, + Traditional channels.

Electric Agora:

A web utopian idea that social media can be used for the advancement of humanity by the sharing and discussion of ideas and theories in forums + Closed groups.

Examples: Reddit, Stack Overflow,

However: Trolls. - a user expressing an unpopular, controversial or offensive opinion  to create negative or unhelpful discussion.

Crowdfunding: Using Web technologies to gain lots of small funds from a larger online audience to create a medium product: e.g. Kickstarter/GoFundMe. E.g. Goons Production - Francors Film.

Crowdsourcing: Using Web technology/ Social Media to source skilled practitioners to create a media product E.g.. LinkedIn, REED, Munster, Freelancer.org

Web Technologies:

Web 1.0 - Text + Image based web pages, hard to code.

Web 2.0 - User Broadband + use of Java, etc resulted in rise of prosumer (YouTube to start) where no specific coding knowledge was needed to post online. Lead to => Social Media: MySpace, Bebo, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, BeReal.

also Globalisation - see previous notes.

Comparative Connectives:

Words which allow comparison:

Whereas - Facebook is not a  microblog, whereas Twitter (X)

Conversely - Instagram is a photo + short video sharing app conversely YouTube only support video.
  • On the other hand
