What are the benefits to Rockstar games of using Crowdsourcing to hire new environment designers?

Some of the people they hire will often be new and just starting out meaning that they will sign contracts for small salaries or just for the exposure and experience. Others will have worked for other existing companies for example such as Sumo Digital and will have pre-existing experience and skills making them just as good if not better than the employees they would already have.

Online scheduling tools allow you to manage projects - your U6 questions are likely to be centred around the creation of media campaigns. meaning you need to reference online tools which can:

  • Manage multiple diaries
  • Organise Teams
  • Assign Tasks
  • Manage a timeline
  • Set Deadlines
  • Communicate changes/updates

Monday.com
Quickbase
Wrike
Trello

Why is using an online tool such as Trello or Monday.com to manage projects more beneficial than using Outlook?

Using Trello or Monday.com to manage projects is more beneficial than using Outlook because they are designed to assign tasks, and manage and set deadlines efficiently. Meanwhile Outlook can organise teams and communicate changes but is otherwise unreliable as a planning application, meaning  you would need to rely on other apps under the Microsoft conglomerate such as Microsoft Teams.

Trello and Monday are colour coded; this is a very useful feature as it shows where each member of the team or each department is up to with their tasks.

Monday and Trello can be used for free unlike with Microsoft which can only be used for a price.

In recent papers, the exam paper has referenced and accepted answers based around e-sports as a form of social media (gaming).

E-Sports (or electronic sports) is a term used to describe competitive video gaming in that esports is competitive (human vs human) and usually has an engaging spectator element to it, like traditional sports.

E-sports tournaments usually consist of a amateur or professional gamers competing against one another one for a cash prize.
For example, League of Legends pits five players against another five in a virtual battle arena to destroy each others base. Whereas in shooters, like Call of Duty, Overwatch and Counter-Strike, players are pit against each other in various modes to complete an object.

E-sports allow players in teams or competition to communicate, as well as stream their matches and competitions with audiences through platforms such as Twitch.Twitch users follow individuals (streamers), Channels or Game titles that produce their own content for consumption (prosumers.)

1. E-Sports players use electric agora (forums) to share information on matches and competitions.

2. E-Sports services (Twitch) allow a wider audience globally (globalsiation) to view matches

3. E-Sports events can be used by media professionals (game publsihers) to promote new products to a targeted audience E-sports channels (Dota 2, Overwatch, Rocket League etc.)

4. Dedicated social media channels - Twitch - exist for E-Sports.

5. E-Sports competitions allow media professionals to engage in advertising and dialogue with a ready made target audience.

6. E-Sports followers can live chat and react to matches in real time through the steaming channels (Twitch, YouTube gaming.)

Moral Panics:

When social media is used to circulate views which some find morally upsetting resulting in widespread concern/panic.

Examples: Blue whale challenge, Andrew Tate, Tory 'Small Boats' Rhetoric, Trump + Bleach.

Social media allows this to happen due to the lack of fact checking  + the rise of citizen journalism means stories/ panics are hard to spot + easy to spread.

Wikinomics: (Tapscott + Williams)

The idea that through online, global collaboration, products can be made better and faster.

Examples:

  • Linux Operating Systems
  • Open Office
  • Minecraft (before MS bought it.)
Principles:

Sharing of ideas
Non proprietary file types
Collaboration (peering)
Acting globally

Benefit to media products: Using Wikinomics Principles, small producers can create better media products through online collaboration

The Long Tail Theory:
The principle that a media product which does not initially perform well financially can do so over time given a better distribution method.

Examples: Anchorman, Fortnite, Slade's 'Merry Xmas Everybody'

Distribution: Online streaming, VoD, MoD, GoD, + Traditional channels.

Electric Agora:

A web utopian idea that social media can be used for the advancement of humanity by the sharing and discussion of ideas and theories in forums + Closed groups.

Examples: Reddit, Stack Overflow,

However: Trolls. - a user expressing an unpopular, controversial or offensive opinion  to create negative or unhelpful discussion.

Crowdfunding: Using Web technologies to gain lots of small funds from a larger online audience to create a medium product: e.g. Kickstarter/GoFundMe. E.g. Goons Production - Francors Film.

Crowdsourcing: Using Web technology/ Social Media to source skilled practitioners to create a media product E.g.. LinkedIn, REED, Munster, Freelancer.org

Web Technologies:

Web 1.0 - Text + Image based web pages, hard to code.

Web 2.0 - User Broadband + use of Java, etc resulted in rise of prosumer (YouTube to start) where no specific coding knowledge was needed to post online. Lead to => Social Media: MySpace, Bebo, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, BeReal.

also Globalisation - see previous notes.

Comparative Connectives:

Words which allow comparison:

Whereas - Facebook is not a  microblog, whereas Twitter (X)

Conversely - Instagram is a photo + short video sharing app conversely YouTube only support video.

LO3/LO4: Gemini films campaign

Gemini Films are an independent film company based in the UK. The company wants to promote the opening of its new film ‘In Static’. The genre of the film is a gritty thriller with a BBFC certification of 15. The film will be released in July 2023. The film is expected to generate interest from a variety of TV magazines and review websites because the lead actor is soap star ‘Harry Sparkie’. The narrative is centered on friendship and homelessness. Gemini Films wants to promote the film six months before the release. The trailer is complete.

6* Develop a social media campaign for the opening of the film ‘In Static’.

In your campaign you must include the following aspects:

  • Timescales, milestones and review dates
  • Channels used to reach the audience
  • Content plan

1. Client Name - The client name will also influence what your handles are called.
Handles - @GeminiFilms + Pages to post to.

2. UK - Tells us the target audience of this film. This should influence the visuals in the advert.

3. New film - It is a film product. The visuals on social media could therefore include trailers, posters, Interviews/ backstage footage. Platforms we could post on: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube. Interview actors on a livestream on Facebook or Instagram. On the live stream the audience can partake in polls or comment questions.

4. 'In Static' - Product name "teaser." Its going to be another handle @InStatic. Can also use hashtags to start trends as this is how you get people to look at your content and go viral.

5. BBFC 15 - Can identify the target audience should definitely use Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.
Need to include 3-4 channels

6. Gritty Thriller - The genre is gritty thriller this will influence our visuals because they have to relate to the genre of the film i.e., reflect the codes and conventions. The house-style colour pallet would include: reds, blacks dark greys, and dark blues. This will dictate visuals.

7. July 2023 - During the holidays the target audience (15+) will use social media more. We should start advertising around February. Prizes should be up for grabs such as tickets to the premiere.

8. Harry Sparkie - The lead actor will be the center of interviews, teasers and trailers. Hashtags and @s should also include him as much as possible. More people in the scenario that are used/targeted the more audience will be targeted.

9. The narrative is centered on friendship and homelessness. Partnership with a homeless charity or organisation. Audience members moving up to media qualifications can enter design competitions with prizes such as meting Harry Sparkie or being able to see the set behind the scenes.

Folksonomy - use any and every opportunity to interact with the audience.

BUDGET UNLESS SPECIFIED IS INFINITE
CAMPAIGNS WILL START SIX MONTHS IN THE FUTURE.

  • Individuals with social media accounts often have to agree to T&C's of employment regarding social media (UTC Staff do).
  • The main point is that employees should exercise Self-Regulation to avoid causing any damage to their employer's image on social media.

Self Regulation
  • The idea here is that individuals (and to a lesser extent companies/organisations) make choices about what to publish as a prosumer on social media.
  • In terms of organisations it's about how social media reflects the ethical and moral guidelines or identity of the organisation.
In this country our social media is subject to law and some regulation by various bodies.

HOWEVER - there are some countries where social media is censored.

China
Turkey
North Korea

These countries exercise tight control of internet access ad have censored most external social media.

Instead they have in some cases created 'approved' social media channels and filtered search options.

Some countries (most notably China & North Korea) also monitor blog posting and online journalism.
Dissident (those speaking out against the establishment) journalists, bloggers or activists are identified by state filters and are often imprisoned.

Explore and understand Moral Panic and the effect social media has in spreading among audiences

Moral Compass

Your moral compass can/is effected by:

- Upbringing

- Religion + Belief

- Friends

- Societal change and events

- Occupation/ Employment

- Experience

Morals - standard of behaviour; principles of right and wrong

Panic - Sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety, often causing wildly unthinking behaviour

The idea of Moral Panic is that someone or something evil/negative is threatening the normal way of life. Historically this has led to literal Witch hunts, outing communists, Anti-Semitism and various other groups as being dangerous.

Social Media & Panic

Whereas in the period before the 1990s Moral Panics were spread by word of mouth, rumour and tabloid journalism. The rise in internet use and access led to information (and misinformation) being spread far and wide more rapidly.

With the advent of Web 2.0 and social media becoming popular, Moral Panics spread more widely and quickly.

How the 9/11 attacks contributed to moral panic around the Muslim faith. The 9/11 contributed to moral panic around the Muslim faith via misinformation and fear mongering from the internet and tabloid newspapers. It gave xenophobic and bigoted people an excuse to target Muslim people.

Gave rise to 'islamophobia' and the Mayor of London at the time described some Muslim people as 'looking like letterboxes.'

In the last 20 years the following media subjects have been subject to scrutiny as a source of moral panic:

  • Violent Video games (ongoing)
  • Slipknot
  • Eminem
  • Instagram 'influencers'
  • Little Britain
  • The Royal British Legion
  • Gender rights
  • The COVID-19 Vaccine
How has Social Media ITSELF been a source of Moral Panic
  • Trolls
  • Misinformation
  • Access to inappropriate content
  • "cloning"
  • Radicalisation
  • Blackmail and extortion
  • Anonymity, lack of consequence and exploitation
  • Body image
  • Social isolation
  • Likes replacing interaction
  • Social media and image rights and distribution
  • Employer checks
  • Polarising topics
Identify two ways that the term 'moral panic' relates to the use of social media channels (2)

A first way that the term moral panic relates to the use of social media channels is due to radicalisation, This is because young and impressionable people can be radicalised by negative presences on the internet who they see as an ideal self or partner Andrew Tate is an example of.

A second way that the term moral panic relates to the use of social media channels is due to body image. This is because children, teenagers and even young adults can all gain a negative body image from seeing posts on social media. An example includes TikTok having huge amounts of dieting and weight loss and holistic health and food influencers on its platform.

LO3: Social media measurement/social media monitoring

Social media measurement or social media monitoring is a way of computing popularity of a brand or company by extracting information from social media channels.

In other words, this is the way to see how successful social media marketing strategies used by a company or brand are. It is also used by companies to gauge current trends in the industry.

The process first gathers data from different websites and then performs analysis based on different metrics like time spent on the page, click through rate, content share, comments, text analytics to identify positive or negative emotions about the brand.

Click through rate - How many times someone has stayed on a website or how long it takes someone to read through everything.

1. Social media measurement

https://onechocolatecomms.co.uk/measure-social-media-efforts/

Explain why it is important to measure campaigns

A reason why it is important to measure campaigns is so that companies can hone their advertising to the right audience judged by the click through rate of their adverts; and also how many people who access their adverts go on to access their website. This is important because if they advertise to the right audience their advertising will be of greater benefit to them.

2. Social network aggregation

Social network aggregation is the process of collecting content from multiple social network services, such as Instagram, Tumblr, Flickr, LinkedIn, Twitter, FB

https://www.socialmediatoday.com/content/7-social-media-aggregation-tools-simplify-your-streams

Explain why social media aggregation is useful for global industries. Investigate one social media aggregator - name, what they do.

Social media aggregation is a useful method for global industries due to the fact that it allows them to target a global mass audience, thanks to the convergence of technology and Web 2.0. This means that they don't need to advertise nearly as much as they would in a print campaign due to the intense circulation such as retweets, reposts, shares, and the fact that the more likes, favourites, and saves will make the post more likely to pop up on someones feed.
